90 Days of You

One day, I grabbed a brush and painted a letter to my friend Gwyneth Ho. Four years, 90 paintings. I know what you’re thinking: why on earth?

Listen, I know it sounds a bit wild, but it all makes sense, I swear. Just hear me out: this is where the story of my exhibition begins.

I met Gwyneth Ho in 2018, when we were classmates and roommates in a master’s program in journalism. We shared unforgettable months in Denmark and the Netherlands. Bonding over parties, food, and drinks. Lots of drinks. The kind of friendship that’s built on laughter, late-night chats (of course, about very serious topics), and shared hangovers.

Later, Gwyneth returned to Hong Kong and stepped into the political spotlight, participating in the legislative council primaries. She was arrested and charged under the national security law. While she was detained, I felt an urge to tell our story. But words, my usual toolbox, just didn’t cut it. Blue paint, on the other hand, did exactly what was needed.

This project became a painted letter to Gwyneth. A visual reflection on our friendship, set against the backdrop of her fight for democracy. Ninety paintings, each one a glimpse through my blue-tinted lens.

Why blue? It’s not just a mood. It’s a message. Blue refers to Gwyneth’s name (藍), and it carries the weight of beauty, integrity, and sensitivity. It’s the soul of this work. The number of paintings, 90, is no coincidence either. It mirrors the standard detention period in Hong Kong, which is 90 days. Though Gwyneth’s detention stretched far beyond that, over a thousand days, the number stands as a quiet protest, a symbolic echo.

Throughout the exhibition, you’ll find friendship, hardship, humour, resilience, love, joy, and unity woven into every canvas.
